How to Become a SEBI Registered Research Analyst: The Definitive 2024 Roadmap
Becoming a SEBI Registered Research Analyst is the most credible qualification a financial markets professional can obtain in India. It signals to clients and employers that you operate within a regulated framework, adhere to a code of conduct, and are accountable for your research. Here is a complete, practical step-by-step guide.
Step 1: Meet the Eligibility Criteria
You must hold a post-graduate degree in finance, economics, business, commerce, or a related discipline, OR a professional qualification (CA, CFA, MBA Finance) from a recognized institution. Additionally, you need at least 5 years of relevant experience in financial advisory, securities analysis, or research. If you hold a graduate degree, you need 10 years of experience.
Step 2: Clear NISM Series XV
Register and pass the NISM Series XV Research Analyst Certification Examination. Score at least 60% in the 100-question MCQ test. The certification is valid for 3 years. This is the mandatory qualification for the SEBI RA application. Thoroughly study the official NISM workbook and solve the practice tests on the NISM portal.
Step 3: Meet Net Worth Requirements
For individual applicants: Minimum net worth of ₹1 lakh (verified by a Chartered Accountant's certificate). For body corporate applicants: Minimum net worth of ₹25 lakhs. Net worth means total assets minus total liabilities as per the latest balance sheet.
Step 4: Apply on SEBI's SSIF Portal
Visit the SEBI Saathi Intermediary Filing (SSIF) portal (ssif.sebi.gov.in). Create an account, fill the Form A application for Research Analyst registration, attach supporting documents (educational certificates, experience letters, net worth certificate, NISM certificate, identity proof, PAN), and pay the application fee (₹10,000 for individuals; ₹5 lakh for body corporates). SEBI processes applications within 30 working days.
Step 5: Set Up Compliance Infrastructure
Once registered, establish your compliance framework: (1) Open a dedicated research publication channel. (2) Draft your standard disclosure templates (conflict of interest, shareholding disclosures). (3) Set up a complaint register and link to SEBI SCORES. (4) Establish research report archival (minimum 5 years). (5) Appoint an annual compliance auditor. (6) Create client subscription agreements compliant with SEBI RA Regulations.
Step 6: Start Your Practice
Build your research focus — whether equities, derivatives, sectors, or macro — and publish consistently. Grow your subscriber base transparently. Renew your SEBI registration every 3 years. Maintain your NISM certification through CPE or re-examination. Stay updated on SEBI circulars and regulatory changes through SEBI's official website and industry newsletters.
