NISM Series X-A: Investment Adviser Level 1 — Your Path to Becoming a SEBI RIA
The NISM Series X-A: Investment Adviser (Level 1) Certification is the foundational mandatory examination for individuals seeking SEBI registration as a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA). Unlike Research Analysts who publish research reports, RIAs provide personalised financial planning and portfolio advisory services to individual clients for a fee.
Who Needs This Certification?
As per SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013, every individual partner and representative providing investment advice must pass NISM Series X-A. The regulations were significantly amended in 2020 to separate advisory from distribution, ensuring RIAs remain fee-only advisers with no product selling conflicts.
Exam Details
Duration: 2 hours. Questions: 100 MCQs. Passing Marks: 60%. Negative Marking: 25%. Fees: ₹1,500 + GST. Validity: 3 years.
Syllabus Key Chapters
Financial Planning Process (20%): Goal setting, cash flow analysis, net worth statement, time value of money. Insurance Planning (15%): Life, health, and general insurance principles. Investment Planning (25%): Asset allocation, risk profiling, investment products. Tax Planning (15%): Income tax slabs, capital gains, 80C deductions. Retirement & Estate Planning (15%): NPS, EPF, PPF, will and nomination. Regulatory Framework (10%): SEBI IA Regulations, code of conduct, suitability obligations.
Career as a SEBI RIA
After passing both NISM X-A (Level 1) and X-B (Level 2), and meeting the net worth and experience requirements, you can register as a SEBI RIA. RIAs charge clients a fee (flat fee or AUM-based), provide written financial plans, and are prohibited from earning commissions. The growing demand for fee-only advice makes this a high-value career path.
