SEBI's Investor Protection & Education Fund: Safeguarding India's Retail Investors
SEBI established the Investor Protection and Education Fund (IPEF) under Section 11 of the SEBI Act, 1992, specifically to promote investor awareness and protection in the Indian securities market. The fund is generated from unclaimed dividends, application money, penalties collected by SEBI, and other sources mandated by law.
Key Objectives of IPEF
1. Investor Education: Funding awareness campaigns, workshops, seminars, and financial literacy programs across Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities. 2. Research & Training: Supporting NISM's academic and training programs. 3. Grievance Redressal: Financing the SEBI SCORES portal infrastructure. 4. Market Development: Funding initiatives that develop market infrastructure and investor confidence.
SEBI's Investor Awareness Campaigns
SEBI runs the 'Sahi Hai' campaign in collaboration with AMFI to promote mutual fund investing. SEBI also regularly issues investor alerts on its official website warning against Ponzi schemes, unregistered investment advisers, fake SEBI offices, and fraudulent tip-based services. These campaigns have significantly improved financial literacy among retail investors.
How to Check if an Advisor is SEBI Registered
Always verify registration on SEBI's official website (sebi.gov.in) under the 'Intermediaries/Market Infrastructure Institutions' section. Enter the registration number or the person's name to confirm active registration. Any person providing investment advice without SEBI registration is operating illegally and should be reported to SEBI or your nearest police station.
