SEBI's New F&O Framework: Restructuring the Derivatives Landscape

In response to growing concerns over retail participation and capital losses in index options trading, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has implemented new guidelines for Equity Derivatives (Futures & Options) in 2026. These regulations aim to promote market stability, curb hyper-speculation, and enforce stricter risk management protocols across brokerage platforms.

Core Regulatory Updates for 2026

1. Revised Contract Lot Sizes: SEBI has increased the minimum contract value for index derivatives to ₹15 lakhs, effectively requiring higher margins to trade Nifty and Bank Nifty options. This move is designed to restrict under-capitalized retail traders from taking excessive leverage.

2. Intraday Margin Requirements: Brokerages must now collect 100% upfront margins on all carry-forward and intraday F&O positions. Standardized peak-margin monitoring has been optimized to prevent systemic leverage risk.

3. Rationalization of Expiries: The weekly option expiry calendar has been streamlined, allowing stock exchanges (NSE and BSE) to offer weekly expiries on only one benchmark index per exchange, reducing the overall speculative volume concentrated on expiry days.

Impact on Retail Traders and Market Liquidity

While these regulations might initially reduce trading volumes and impact intraday liquidity, they are expected to build a healthier, more sustainable market structure. Under the new rules, traders must shift focus towards hedged option strategies (like credit spreads and iron condors) rather than buying naked out-of-the-money options, which historically resulted in high loss ratios.

How to Adapt Your Trading Strategy

To navigate this new regulatory regime, traders must: (1) Maintain higher capital reserves to meet margin requirements. (2) Prioritize risk-defined spreads to minimize volatility impact. (3) Utilize stop-loss orders diligently to shield capital from sudden price shocks. (4) Focus on education and certified research instead of speculative tips.
