NISM: The Educational & Research Arm of SEBI
The National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) was established by SEBI in 2006 as a public trust under the Indian Trusts Act, 1882. Located in Patalganga, Raigad district of Maharashtra, NISM's primary mandate is to enhance the quality and standards of professionals and practices in the Indian securities markets through education, certification, research, and training.
NISM's Core Functions
1. Certification Examinations: NISM conducts mandatory certification exams for market intermediaries as prescribed by SEBI. These include Series I through Series XXI covering every category of capital market professional. 2. Continuing Professional Education (CPE): NISM offers CPE programs for certified professionals to keep them updated on regulatory changes and market developments. 3. Research: NISM publishes research reports on capital market development, investor behavior, and regulatory effectiveness.

Series I: Currency Derivatives. Series II-A: Registrars to an Issue & Share Transfer Agents (Corporate). Series V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors. Series VII: Securities Operations & Risk Management. Series VIII: Equity Derivatives. Series X-A & X-B: Investment Adviser (Level 1 & 2). Series XV: Research Analyst. Series XVI: Commodity Derivatives. Series XXI-A: Portfolio Management Services.
Why NISM Certifications Matter
SEBI mandates NISM certifications for employees of registered intermediaries and for individuals seeking their own SEBI registration. Without a valid NISM certification, you cannot legally act as a mutual fund distributor, research analyst, investment adviser, or derivatives trader on behalf of clients. These certifications are valid for 3 years and require renewal through a re-examination or CPE program.
