SEBI RIA vs SEBI RA: What's the Difference?

Many investors confuse a SEBI Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) with a sebi registered research analyst (RA). While both are regulated by SEBI and require mandatory certifications, they serve fundamentally different purposes, operate under different regulations, and have distinct client obligations.

Research Analyst (RA)

A Research Analyst prepares and publishes research reports on securities — typically on specific stocks, sectors, or derivatives. Research is general in nature and not personalised for a specific client. RAs operate under SEBI (Research Analysts) Regulations, 2014 and must pass NISM Series XV. They are required to disclose conflicts, maintain research records for 5 years, and are restricted from trading in covered securities for specified periods.

Investment Adviser (RIA)

A Registered Investment Adviser provides personalised financial and investment advice to individual clients after conducting a thorough risk profiling and suitability assessment. RIAs operate under SEBI (Investment Advisers) Regulations, 2013. They must pass NISM Series X-A and X-B. RIAs are strictly fee-only — they cannot earn commissions on products they recommend. They must maintain client agreements, investment policy statements, and suitability reports.

Key Comparison Table

Regulation: RA — RA Regulations 2014 | RIA — IA Regulations 2013. Certification: RA — NISM XV | RIA — NISM X-A + X-B. Output: RA — General research reports | RIA — Personalised advice. Fee Model: RA — Subscription/flat fee | RIA — Fee-only (no commission). Net Worth: RA — ₹1L (individual) | RIA — ₹5L (individual). Restriction: RA — Cannot trade in covered stocks | RIA — Cannot distribute products.
